Member Profile: Lars Oyno

Added December 2007.

Lars Oyno is a Norwegian expat and moved to Calgary January 2007. He flies a small composite two-seater called MCR01 with a Rotax 912S engine. The aircraft is designed in France, parts are moulded in Portugal, the engine is from Austria, the instruments from the US, the aircraft was built in the UK, Lars is Norwegian and flies the aircraft in Canada – so this is truly an international project! Lars holds a commercial licence with an instrument rating. He is also an enthusiastic glider pilot.

The MCR01 was designed by Christophe Robin in France. Christophe is son of the famous aircraft designer and factory owner of the Robin series of aircraft http://www.mistralaviation.co.uk/aircraft/dr400.asp, which has been popular for decades. Christophe wanted to build modern designs using very light carbon fibre construction and utilize a small engine. The result was the MCR01, which is produced in three versions, the VLA, the Club version and the Ultralight version. The only differences between the versions are the size and profiles of the flying surface. Lars’ version is the smallest and fastest of the three; the VLA version.
Information about the factory’s products can be found on http://www.dynaero.com/lien/indexuk.htm

The fuselage is made of carbon fibre shells glued together and carbon fibre bulkheads are then added. The wings have a carbon fibre spar, with foam ribs and aluminum skin. The flying surfaces were built at the factory using the factory’s jigs and a swat-team from UK/Norway.
Lars has an in-flight variable pitch propeller mounted on the Rotax 912S. The empty weight of the aircraft is only 538 lbs, combined with a fine pitch gives the aircraft very good climbing performance. With VOR, an able GPS and autopilot the aircraft is also great for IFR training and cross country flights. One of Lars’ great moments was flying into Oshkosh Summer 2007 in the aircraft, a life-long dream coming true.

Lars brought the aircraft with him from Norway in the same container as his family’s furniture. It now has close to 200 flawless hours. Lars enjoys taking one or both of his young daughters for rides, they both love flying. The next project has to have four seats, that is certain! Considering Velocity, RV10 and BD4...............
